Walk into any sleepwear section — online or in-store — and you will find two dominant options: cotton and satin. They look and feel completely different, attract different types of sleepers, and both have devoted fans. If you have ever stood in front of two options and genuinely not known which to choose, this guide is for you.
Cotton Pyjamas: The Everyday Essential
Cotton is the most widely sold pyjama fabric in Europe, and for good reason. It is breathable, durable, easy to care for, and suitable for almost every sleeper. The key variable with cotton is the weave: jersey cotton (stretchy, casual) feels different from poplin cotton (crisp, structured) or interlock cotton (thick, warm).
Pros of Cotton
- Highly breathable and moisture-wicking — perfect for warm sleepers or hot climates
- Hypoallergenic — ideal for sensitive skin, eczema, and allergies
- Machine washable at 40°C without damage
- Gets noticeably softer with every wash
- Affordable and long-lasting — a quality cotton set can last 3–5 years
- Available in the widest range of styles, cuts, and prints
Cons of Cotton
- Creases easily — not great if you care about looking polished at breakfast
- Thinner cotton feels less luxurious than satin
- Can shrink if washed above 40°C
- Less dramatic or gift-ready than satin
Satin Pyjamas: The Luxurious Choice
Satin is a weave, not a fibre. It can be made from silk, polyester, or a blend. Most affordable satin pyjamas use polyester satin, which has the visual appearance and silky feel of real silk at a fraction of the price. True silk satin exists but is significantly more expensive and requires much more careful care.
Pros of Satin
- Luxurious, smooth feel against the skin — immediately noticeable
- Does not cling or bunch during sleep
- Temperature-regulating — feels cool in summer, comfortable in winter
- Beautiful appearance — great for photos, gifts, and honeymoons
- Does not wrinkle significantly
- Hair-friendly — satin pillowcases are recommended for preventing hair breakage
Cons of Satin
- Less breathable than cotton — can feel uncomfortable for hot sleepers in summer
- Requires careful washing — cold wash, no spin or very low spin
- Can snag on rough skin, jewellery, or Velcro
- Polyester satin is not eco-friendly
- Less durable than cotton with regular washing
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Cotton If:
- You sleep hot or sweat at night
- You have sensitive skin, eczema, or fabric allergies
- You want low-maintenance sleepwear that can handle frequent washing
- You prefer a casual, comfortable look
- You are buying for children or daily use
Choose Satin If:
- You want to feel genuinely luxurious at bedtime
- You are buying a gift or something special for a holiday
- You sleep at a comfortable temperature (not too hot)
- You love the aesthetic of elegant, polished sleepwear
- You want something that photographs beautifully
Cannot decide? Many of our customers own both — cotton for regular weeknights and satin for weekends, travel, or special occasions. It is genuinely the best of both worlds.
What About Bamboo and Modal?
Two newer alternatives worth mentioning: bamboo viscose is incredibly soft, naturally antibacterial, and more eco-friendly than cotton. Modal is a type of semi-synthetic fibre made from beech tree pulp — it is softer than cotton, holds colour better, and is more resistant to shrinkage. Both are excellent choices if you want something different.
