One of the top reasons people return online clothing purchases is incorrect sizing. With pyjamas, it is even trickier because different brands cut them differently — some run slim for a neat look, others are intentionally oversized for a relaxed feel. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure and what those measurements mean.
How to Measure Yourself Correctly
You need a soft tape measure (a piece of string and a ruler also works). Measure while standing naturally, breathing normally — do not hold your breath or suck in.
- Chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it horizontal
- Waist: measure around your natural waist, about 2cm above your belly button
- Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips, usually 20cm below your waist
- Inside leg: measure from the top of your inner thigh down to the floor
- Height: measure without shoes, standing straight against a wall
Always measure in your underwear, not over clothing. Add 3–5cm to your chest and hip measurements for a comfortable pyjama fit — pyjamas should never be tight.
Understanding EU vs UK vs US Sizing
Most pyjamas sold in Europe use EU sizing. Women's sizes typically run from 34 to 54, while men use S through 3XL. If you are used to UK sizing for women, subtract 4 from your UK size (UK 12 = EU 38). US sizes run approximately 2 sizes smaller than EU sizes (US M = EU 38).
For men, the most reliable guide is chest measurement in centimetres: S fits 86–91cm, M fits 96–101cm, L fits 106–111cm, XL fits 116–121cm, and 2XL fits 124–129cm.
Pyjama Fit Guide
Fitted vs Relaxed vs Oversized
Most pyjamas are designed with a relaxed fit — cut looser than regular clothes. If you prefer a snug, neat look, size down. If you want to lounge comfortably or layer underneath, stick to your usual size. If you love the oversized trend (baggy top, loose trousers), size up. When in doubt, size up — pyjamas can always be worn loose but cannot go the other way.
Length: Do Not Ignore It
Pyjama trousers often come in a standard length. If you are taller than 175cm (women) or 185cm (men), look for long-leg or tall options. If you are shorter, a slight break at the ankle is perfectly fine. Many people also roll pyjama trousers up slightly — this is a common and acceptable adjustment.
Kids Sizing: Always Go by Height
For children, never rely on age. A 4-year-old can wear anything from 3Y to 5Y depending on their height and build. When in doubt, size up — a slightly larger pyjama will still fit well and give room to grow.
- 0–3 months: up to 62cm height
- 6–12 months: approx 74–80cm height
- 1–2 years: approx 80–92cm height
- 3–4 years: approx 98–104cm height
- 5–6 years: approx 110–116cm height
- 7–8 years: approx 122–128cm height
- 9–10 years: approx 134–140cm height
What to Do When You Are Between Sizes
If your measurements fall between two sizes, consider which part of your body is harder to fit. Broader shoulders? Go up a size. Narrow waist with wider hips? Size up and use the drawstring to adjust the waist. Longer legs? Size up for length, then roll or hem if needed.
If you are buying pyjamas as a gift and are unsure of the size, always go larger. A large pyjama can be worn loosely; a small one cannot be worn at all.
